2014-2015 New Year Meeting, Activity and Deadlines

IMSA FUSION

2014-2015

September 18, 2014 at 7pm

This is when we had our Beginning the New Year Meeting.  We had a wonderful turnout and was very please to either welcome to IMSA or welcome our returning members back!  Mrs. Blust and Miss Dornon are excited to get IMSA underway this year.  If you were unable to attend the meeting please see one of us to get an application or you can get one from Mrs. Sibbing, our new Dean of Students and IMSA Coordinator!

Below are a few pictures from the fun activity we had the families participate in.

Magnetism by Induction was the challenge for the evening.  The groups were to try to create the longest vertical chain of paperclips using their magnets.  The paperclips could not be hooked together!!!  They were all given five minutes to practice and develop a plan and then a one minute competition took place.  The longest chain achieved was 13 paperclips!!  Nice job to everyone who participated!!  We really loved seeing all of the ideas you came up with.

If anyone would like the powerpoint that we shared at the meeting please contact Miss Dornon and she would be happy to email it to you!!

Below are the deadlines and other important dates as for the application process:

Applications due:   September 25th

Team Review of Applications: September 25th - 27th

Notification of Acceptance:  September 27th

First meeting: September 29th from 3-4:50 pm

The End of a Year =(

2013-2014 Year of IMSA ended with a Family Scavenger Hunt that involved all of the Secret Codes we had worked with throughout 2 nd Semester as the clues.

We had a great time watching all of the hard work done by our members and their families.  It seemed as though all ages had a wonderful time!

Mrs. Blust and Miss Dornon were extremely proud of all the IMSA Members and their hard work throughout the year.  We also appreciate all of the parent support, it could not happen without all you do!  Thank you.  We are truly looking forward to getting the new year and unit up and running.

Here are the three teams to successfully finish the Scavenger Hunt!!  Everyone worked very hard and had a GREAT time also!!!

See you soon =)

Date change and 5-5-14 meeting

**** IMSA Family Night has been moved to May 19th, 2014.  This is due to so many conflicts that were occurring on May 12th.  Sorry for any inconvenience but to attain the best attendance we felt this was the best move to make!!!  Can't wait to see you all there!****

Monday's lesson was entitled Who's Holding the Key!  We have worked all semester on various codes for words or messages.  Today we worked with how to code a number.  Although it was quite confusing we worked our way through it!  The kids did a wonderful job!  Mrs. Blust and I were very proud of them.  The picture above shows the basic outline as to how we sent the code.  We then decided on a hidden integer and put numbers on the nodes to total that integer.  Next we added up all the numbers that were directly connected by the lines and put the totals next to the nodes.  On the second picture it shows larger nodes.  If you add the numbers up of those nodes, you should get your hidden integer.

Don't forget May 19th, 2014 is IMSA FAMILY NIGHT!  MARK YOUR CALENDARS and WE WILL SEE YOU THERE!!

Digitized Messages-- 4/28/14

This week we worked more with Morse Code.  First we had them experience a Morse Code message in a slowed down version.  We then discussed it and played it again at normal speed.  Again, we discussed the differences and talked about other ways we could transmit the same message.  The students suggested using light would be a good way.  So we gave it a try, we turned off the lights and sent a message to decode with a flashlight.  Again we discussed similarities/differences between the messages up to this point.

We then engineered our own Morse Code Transmitters and practiced sending messages.  After we became more comfortable with the transmitting we had the students send messages to one another and try to decipher it!  Students quickly learned that it requires a lot of concentration and focus to try to decipher this type of message.  Fun was had by all!!

Lastly, we had the students rub flower petals over their invisible ink message/drawing so that it would be revealed.  Although it was quite messy (don't try at home) it was very fun also!

Please be checking back on this blog and checking with your student(s) for the invitation to The Spring Family Night!!  I will be posting the information and getting it to the students very soon.  Keep May 12th, 2014 from 5-6:30 pm open to attend IMSA's Spring Family Night!!!
